Students from the Industrial Engineering Department of Ondokuz Mayıs University participated in hands-on training at the Model Factory as part of their Lean Manufacturing course, focusing on SMED (Single-Digit Mold Changeover) and Poka-Yoke. During the training, students analyzed a real-world case study, identified opportunities for improvement, and developed solutions using lean tools.
Students had the opportunity to experience the fundamental approach of lean manufacturing in a field setting. Within the framework of the program conducted at the Model Factory, they observed SMED (Single-Digit Minute Mold Changeover) and Poka-Yoke (Error Prevention) applications firsthand. They then worked on a chosen case study, offering suggestions for reducing unnecessary steps, simplifying workflows, eliminating sources of error, and lowering setup/changeover times.
In the practical application, which involved all students, teams completed the observation and data collection phases, then presented their improvement suggestions in reports. The work demonstrated that lean manufacturing tools are not only theoretical but also applicable in the field, contributing to students' problem-solving, teamwork, and analytical evaluation skills.
